The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of the medium of art. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create the film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of a particular Jury member. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
